Product Details
- Amikacin 500 mg/2 mL – Belongs to the aminoglycoside class of antibiotics and works by binding to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis and killing susceptible bacteria.
- Indications – It is indicated for serious, often hospital acquired infections such as sepsis, complicated urinary tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections (pneumonia), intra abdominal infections, bone joint infections, skin soft tissue infections, and sometimes meningitis due to Gram negative bacteria.
- Administration & Dosage – The injection is given intravenously or intramuscularly, usually once or twice daily as per weight and renal function guided dosing, and is typically used for short term treatment (around 7–10 days) under close monitoring.

Side Effects
- Nephrotoxicity (Kidney Damage): Amikacin can cause decreased urine output, rising creatinine, and signs of renal impairment, especially in elderly, dehydrated, or pre renal compromised patients.
- Ototoxicity (Ear Toxicity): Tinnitus, hearing loss, or vertigo and balance problems; risk increases with higher dose, prolonged use, or concomitant nephrotoxic drugs (e.g., vancomycin, loop diuretics).
- Neuromuscular Blockade: Rarely, muscle weakness or respiratory muscle depression, especially in patients with myasthenia or those on neuromuscular blocking agents.
- Local Reactions: Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site; rarely, phlebitis with IV use.
- Miscellaneous: Allergic type reactions (rash, pruritus), nausea, vomiting, and laboratory only abnormalities.
Amikacin is contraindicated or used with extreme caution in patients with significant renal impairment, severe hearing loss disorders, Parkinson like or myasthenic states, pregnancy (especially high dose/long term), and in those already on other nephro or oto toxic drugs.
