Product Details
SP-Tazolin 4.5GM Injection is a combination of two antibiotics used to treat various bacterial infections. Piperacillin belongs to penicillins that work by stopping the growth of bacteria. Tazobactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that reduces resistance and enhances the activity of Piperacillin against bacteria.
Brief description
- Piperacillin 4000 mg – A ureido penicillin with extended Gram negative coverage, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Enterobacter, and Proteus.
- Tazobactam 500 mg – A beta lactamase inhibitor that protects piperacillin from degradation by many bacterial enzymes, thereby restoring and broadening its activity against resistant strains.
- Administration & Usage – The 4.5 g vial (4000 mg + 500 mg) with 20 mL sterile water is meant for IV intermittent infusion or IV push in hospital settings, usually given every 6–8 hours depending on infection severity and renal function.

Side Effects
- Common: Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, headache, rash, and injection site reaction (pain, redness, phlebitis).

Serious but Less Common:
- Hypersensitivity or anaphylaxis (rash, urticaria, angioedema, breathing difficulty) – especially in penicillin allergic patients.
- Clostridioides difficile associated colitis (severe diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fever).
- Liver function abnormalities (elevated transaminases), mild kidney function changes, and transient blood count changes (platelet or WBC related).
- Rarely, seizures (especially in renal impaired patients on high doses), major bleeding due to prolonged coagulation time, or severe skin reactions (e.g., Stevens Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis).
Contraindicated in patients with known serious penicillin/cephalosporin allergy and used cautiously in renal impaired, hepatically impaired, or bleeding diathesis patients, with dose adjustment as per glomerular filtration rate.
