Spocmine Tablets
Spocmine Tablet is a combination medicine used in the treatment of abdominal cramps. It works effectively to reduce abdominal pain and cramps by relaxing the muscles of the stomach and gut. It also blocks certain chemical messengers that cause pain and fever.
May cause sleepiness — avoid driving. Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine.
- Mefenamic Acid 250 mg – A non steroidal anti inflammatory drug (NSAID) that reduces pain and inflammation by blocking prostaglandin mediated pathways.
- Paracetamol 325 mg – A centrally acting analgesic and antipyretic that lowers pain and fever, useful when NSAID alone coverage is inadequate.
- Dicyclomine HCl 10 mg – An anticholinergic/antispasmodic that relaxes smooth muscle of the gut, reducing intestinal spasms, cramps, bloating, and colicky type pain.
The tablet is generally taken with food, 2–3 times daily as per physician advice, and is positioned as a short term spasm relieving analgesic for abdominal colic type complaints, not for chronic pain or long term NSAID use.
- Relief of Abdominal Colic and Spasms:
- Dicyclomine rapidly relaxes gut smooth muscle, easing cramps, bloating, and discomfort in IBS type pain, menstrual colic like abdominal pain, and functional dyspepsia related spasms.
- Dual Mechanism Pain Control:
- Mefenamic acid addresses inflammation and pain (e.g., menstrual type pelvic abdominal pain), while paracetamol adds central analgesia and may reduce low grade fever associated body ache.
- Convenience:
- Single tablet combination improves compliance in patients who otherwise need separate antispasmodic and NSAID.
Common side effects are mainly GI and anticholinergic:
- GI: Nausea, vomiting, upper abdominal discomfort, flatulence, constipation or diarrhoea, and gastric irritation from mefenamic acid.
- Anticholinergic (due to dicyclomine): Dry mouth, dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision, and occasional tachycardia or difficulty in urination, especially in elderly patients.
- Mefenamic Acid/NSAID-related: Headache, fluid retention, raised blood pressure, and, rarely, gastritis, peptic-ulcer-like symptoms, or liver-kidney function changes with prolonged use.
Contraindicated or used cautiously in patients with peptic-ulcer disease, GI-bleed risk, severe renal or hepatic impairment, glaucoma, urinary-retention disorders, myasthenia gravis, pregnancy, and in those on anticoagulants or other NSAIDs.
- Gynaecologists / Obstetricians – for dysmenorrhoea (period related cramps) and menstrual colic type pelvic abdominal pain with spasms.
- Gastroenterologists / General Physicians – for IBS type abdominal pain, functional dyspepsia, and non organic colic type spasmodic pain.
- Surgeons / Emergency Physicians – for acute abdominal colic type pain pending diagnosis, or as a bridging agent for colicky type pain.
- Pediatricians (for older adolescents in selected cases) – for menstrual type or severe cramp type abdominal pain when NSAID plus antispasmodic use is justified.
